Round 6 Hampton Downs Saturday 30th April 2022

Again the weather was perfect with possible showers later in the day which never affected us fortunately. Numbers we again very modest as were the numbers of racing saloons that were combined with us.

We had Michael Bristow driving Cam Crawford’s Mercury Cyclone which after some enhancements was achieved a pole time of 1:08.0 followed by Craig Horn in the ex Veen Smith Commodore then the Paul in the pink Torana

Race 1, our usual scratch race was lead home comfortably by Michael and then followed Paul who after a great start just managed to hold out a very fast finishing Craig. Class B was led home by Andrew Ross in the Pinepac replica Falcon and the Chris Anderson in the JPS replica Mustang.

Race 2 was a reverse grid start but not a handicap. Paul again got a great start and was second overall and first NMC car going into turn 1 before Michael in the Cyclone passed him later in lap 1 and then by Craig on lap 3. Class B was led home by Andrew and then Chris.

Race 3 was a scratch race again with Pinky continuing it great starts and almost sneaking down the side of the Cyclone going into turn 1 however it was not to be and Michael motored off into the distance. Craig in the red Commodore did not start this race due to an alternator problem. The main action on the track however was a very tight dual fought between the 6 cylinder Torana and Colin’s big block Corvette with Colin getting along side a couple of times on the start finish line. On the last lap however Colin made a do or die bid to pass Pinky to snatch second place but just missed out by .032 of a second and also missed out on getting around turn 1 and so had to be rescued from the sand, however no damage was done.

With one race to go in our 21/22 season Colin leads class A by 205 points from Paul followed by Craig. Class B has been pretty well tied up by Chris Anderson with Andrew Ross not too far behind.

The final round is at Taupo on May 29th.
