Round 5 Pukekohe Park Raceway Sunday 2nd March 2019

Another beautiful day which left no doubt that the wets could be left on the trailer. There were a couple of extra classes running at this meeting which meant that the pits were quite cramped and the day was long.

Qualifying
We qualified with the Racing Saloons but did not race with them.
There were some good times recorded in qualifying with even better to come for most people later in the day, but your name had to be Paul to be on the front row with the Urquhart XA Falcon Coupe edging out the Burnet pink Torana by 0.2 of a second. Then, less than another tenth back, was Dave Campbell in the Mustang followed by the Commodores of Calvin and Ross. We lost Colin in the big block Corvette as this point with gearbox issues “the only non Corvette part in the car”

Race 1
Well neither of the Pauls got a great start and it was left to Calvin from position 4 to lead the field into turn one, closely followed by Pinky. Dave Campbell managed to get past Paul U on the first lap and then Pinky on the 3rd lap. Dave was really flying and managed to get into the lead, only to lose it again to Calvin at the hairpin when he went wide. Kayton was also making his way forward, passing Paul U on the 4th lap and then Pinky on the 6th lap. Disaster struck for Pinky on lap 8 when he went too wide onto the back straight trying to keep Ross behind him and trying to catch up to Kayton and spun inwards, hitting the inside wall, giving the front of the Torana a face like a Mk II Escort.
There were some great lap times recorded with Dave and Kayton in the 1:04s and Ross,Warren, Pauls and Calvin in the 1:05s Wes in the 1:06s and Michael and Lee in the 1:07s.
So race one ended with Calvin winning in the ENZED replica Commodore, then Dave Campbell and Kayton for 3rd in Class A.
Warren in the blue SLR Torana led home Class B, followed by Wes in another LH Torana with Michael Crawley 3rd in the blue and white Commodore.

Race 2
While numbers were down with the loss of Colin and Pinky, the whole field started within 18 seconds which is just about unheard of.
With the lap times so close it was hard for the “faster” cars to move through the field, however the handicapping was pretty good with Michael winning from starting position 2 with Calvin very close behind in 2nd from starting position 4 and Ross 3rd from position 6.

Race 3
Our second handicap again started with a tight grouping, with Michael leading the field away as Lee had decided to sit this one out. This time however it was up to Ross to try and chase Michael down but again it was Michael who took the chequered flag first with Ross only 1 second behind and then Kayton another second back. Wes retired from the race, being worried about noises from the rear end.

Current Position Standings are:

Class A     1st Ross Golding,       2nd Colin Schischka, 3rd Kayton Coughey
Class B     1st Michael Crawley,  2nd Paul Burnet,       3rd Wes Kidby
Invitation 1st Lee Budd,            2nd Paul Urquhart
