Round 2 Pukekohe Park Raceway (Saturday 15th October)

I must start by congratulating all the NZ drivers who went to Bathurst, who put on a very creditable display with some good sensible driving. Club member Colin Meadows can now say he has won a race at Bathurst.

We had a bad weather forecast for our second round at Pukekohe but a very good entry of 15 cars including a couple of guests being Clarke Hopkins with his silver hatch back Torana and Russell Dunn with his red XY Falcon.

It was however to be a day of attrition with only two members cars completing all races and qualifying. Well done Ron Findlay and Robbo Robinson. The rest of us had a fairly checkered day.

Before qualifying even started we had lost 4 cars - Alan Pearce with an issue with his new tow vehicle, Graham Cargill, Dave Campbell and Tony Mckenzie-Edwards with lack of wet weather tyres or not wanting to venture out in the very bad conditions at the start of the day. During qualifying we lost Colin Schischka with a rear suspension issue in his big block Corvette.

So at the beginning of race one we were down to 10, there was some confusion as to whether the race meeting was wet or not so some drivers ran on dry tyres and some on wets. There was no confusion about the track though it was bone dry by this point. During this race we lost Ross Golding with an oil pressure issue, Michael Crawley with electrical and wheel issues and Clarke Hopkins with ring gear problems.

Billy Dunn took out Class A with Veen second, with Paul leading home Class B followed by new members Robbo Robinson and Mark Stretton. Ron Findlay was having a great day leading home the Invitation Class.

We started race 2 with 7 cars however neither Paul or Veen managed to complete a lap Paul due to electrical issues with either the battery or alternator, Veen after an accident at turn one most probably caused by a broken axle. Mark Stretton also did not make it to the flag but like Paul was to appear for the last race.

Class A was won by the survivor Billy Dunn and Class B by Robbo Robinson, with Ron in the Invitation Class managing to successfully get to the end.

The final race of the day finally got underway after the previous race had both a Safety Car and a red flag. This race was won by Paul after Michael Crawley had lent him a battery, then came Billy, Ron, Mark and Robbo.

Let's hope for a less eventful meeting at Puke on Sunday 13th November, again at Pukekohe.

The placings after two rounds in the classes are;
Class A: Billy Dunn, Tony Galbraith, Dave Campbell
Class B: Mark Stretton, Paul Burnet, Michael Crawley
Invitation Class: Ron Findlay
