Round 1 Hampton Downs (Saturday 5 September 2015)

After not great forecasts during the week the rain kindly stayed away for our first meeting of the season. We had a great turnout of 17 cars made up of existing members, new members Sean Fowler, Alan Pearce and new old members Andrew Sinlcair and Tim La Trobe.
Returning member Tim La Trobe after an absence of 5 years grabbed pole with a time of 1:12.1 on a cold track, followed by Alan Pearce and Bruce McRae who was supposedly bedding in brakes.
Further down the timesheets there were a few dramas unfolding, in particular Andrew Sinclair’s bonnet and his dad Keith’s Hemi Cuda decided to throw the fan into the radiator again which was to be the end of the Cuda’s day. Mike Dias in the Winfield Commodore had electrical problems which unfortunately were not to be solved on the day and Stu Rowling’s Walkinshaw Commodore was starting to send some distressed signals to the rest of the competitors.

Race 1
This was won convincingly by Alan Pearce after Tim’s Merc which had destroyed 2nd gear in qualifying had suspension issues after starting from the pit lane. With Stu Rowling under a cloud and only completing 1 lap we were down to 13 cars, but the racing was excellent with the leading group behind Alan fighting a close battle to the flag being covered at the end by 1.5 seconds. This group consisted of Bruce in the HQ Monaro, Greg in the XR GT and Ross in the Malboro Commodore. The next group consisted of 5 cars until Colin in the Corvette took himself out of the reckoning with a spin at Turn 4. The remaining 4 cars were led home by Cam in the XA Falcon Coupe, Veen in the VK Commodore, Michael in the VK Commodore, all within 3 seconds at the flag.
Final results were
Class A  1st Alan Pearce, 2nd Bruce McRae, 3rd Ross Golding
Class B 1st Greg Holden, 2nd Cam Crawford, 3rd Michael Crawley

Race 2
This was the first of our handicap races and was comfortably won by Duane in his great looking Dodge Challenger on its maiden track outing. Behind Duane things were fast and close with great handicapping seeing Bruce just hold out Alan by less than half a second.
Final results were
Class A 1st Duane Ingley, 2nd Bruce McRae, 3rd Alan Pearce
Class B 1st Cam Crawford, 2nd Michael Crawley, 3rd Graham Cargill

Race 3
This was also a handicap with again the handicapping producing a great race with a very close result with Alan just leading Ross Golding home by a 1/3 of a second.  Bruce just managed to catch Michael Crawley before the line.
Final results were
Class A 1st Alan Pearce, 2nd Ross Golding, 3rd Bruce McRae
Class B 1st Michael Crawley, 2nd Colin Schischka, 3rd Cam Crawford.
Overall it was a great meeting other than the mechanical issues for a number of members and Greg Holden’s heavy brush with the wall at turn 5 when competing with another class.
It was great to see even non-competing members there:  thanks to Ross Graham, Paul Urquhart, Dave O’Leary, Ron Findlay, Tony and Vicky Mckenzie Edwards and Tony van Tiel, John Mills, Wes Kidby.
