12 January 2013
We had a reasonable turnout for this hastily organised meeting to replace the cancelled Thunder in the Park. The weather was real hot on Saturday with the asphalt behind the pits being measured at 62 degrees in the early afternoon.
We had a trio of guests for this meeting, being Ross Graham and Clarke Hopkins in hatchback Toranas and Anthony Baker in his well sorted and fast 240Z. New member Calvin Andrews had his VH Commodore on the track for the first time after a huge effort over Christmas to get the car ready.
Practice went smoothly for most cars with Dean Perkins leading the way followed by Andrew Turner then Pinky. Unfortunately for Tony Mackenzie Edwards his XD Falcon decided it had had enough and was towed in with a nasty looking hole in the sump.
This was a short race of only 3 laps due to the safety car being called out to retrieve David Howell out of the sand trap. The official results for this abbreviated race were the same as qualifying: Dean first followed by Andrew then Paul.
This was the first of the two handicap races of the weekend and as we were running with the Historic Pre 78 Saloon and GTs meant there were quite a few cars for the NMC cars to pass. This race also unfortunately ended under Safety Car conditions as Andrew Turner had a big moment going into the sweeper before the back straight, just tagging slightly Paul’s Torana but causing extensive damage to the real and passenger side of Andrew’s Commodore. The final results for the race were David Howell 1st, Ron Findlay 2nd, Ross Golding 3rd.
Again this was the race with prize money sponsored by Tony Gordon Panel Beaters, and I am pleased to report that it went the whole distance, in fact an extra lap was added unbeknown to this driver anyway. The race was thankfully incident free and ended with new member Calvin Andrews winning his first ever race, followed by Ron Findlay and the ever present Ross Golding.
It was a good race meeting with a very well supported BBQ at the Rainbow Point Motel sponsored by Nautech Electronics.
The placings for the 3 Classes are as follows.
Class A: Ross Golding, Dean Perkins and Andrew Turner.
Class B: Graham Cargill, Paul Burnet, Steve Swan.
Invitation Tony Gordon, Ron Findlay and Mike Dias
